"Spectacular Day"

The last half of the 19th century saw many small towns and cities in Southern Ontario come of age and with it came an explosion of domestic architecture that found its inspiration in the historic styles of Europe. It was the Victorian era and, as long as it was reminiscent of these styles from the past, anything was possible.

I love touring the older sections of Ontario’s towns and cities where one finds magnificent interpretations of Gothic, Classical, Italianate and Georgian traditions in stately old homes on spacious lots. Today’s housing still borrows from these traditions in many cases but now they are crammed onto miniscule slices of land, thereby losing much of their impact.

The goal of this winter scene was much the same as all of the others I have created. I wanted to create an atmosphere of a crisp, clear, brilliant morning long before the realities of modern living destroyed the image.
