"A Day Cut Short" is finished.

There was something about simpler times that would have been very satisfying. The amount of work involved would, however, have been overwhelming to today's labourer, no matter what his field of endeavour.

i look at this image and am awestruck by what it implies. In the first place, simply preparing the team to go out must have taken a great deal of time. I can not even imagine what that entailed. One also has to consider the amount of physical effort that was expected of the farmer to keep the plough on course and at an even depth. I have no idea how long the days of ploughing were but, whatever their length, the day must have ended in sheer exhaustion. It would be easy to understand why a day cut short would be a welcome relief but, then again, the harnessing took some considerable time and the growing season is only so long. Talk about a "catch 22".
