| To say that my paintings are a window to the things that I value most is pretty stupid. There are lot of things that I value that don't get translated into paint...most particularly my dear wife (although she has upon occasion been added to the work). I do really appreciate, however, the iconic things about the Ontario countryside. Two of them stand out as favourites. One is stone farmhouses and the other is Tiger Lilies. This isn't the first time I have brought the two together to form a perfectly pleasant image of rural Southern Ontario. |

I really don't know what the fascination with old things is. I don't really think it's a case of "They don't build them as they used to" but rather that there is so much to learn about studying the past. I truly believe that to ignore the past is to fail in coping with the future.
I have to say that I feel that in not valuing the architecture and the environment that we inherited, we don't really have much hope in saving it.
By the same token, I don't think "Desperate Days" is all that desperate. There remains something comforting about being surrounded by old things. |

| It seems to me that in each of my pieces a single element of nature dominates the work.and the rest of the painting is built around it. In this one I love the trees which speak to the richness of the environment in which poverty obviously reigns. The title may be "Desperate Days" but it's clearly not about desperation. It's more about the sacrifices made by farmers in a modern economic environment because of their love of the land. |

I was born at the end of the last World War and, as I was growing up in this province moving from one rural area to another, I remember very well a rural farming economy which had obviously suffered mightily through the war years. My general recollections were of farmsteads badly in need of repair and upgrading. In choosing to depict such a farmstead, however, I am not in anyway interested in emphasizing the desperation one might experience in such a situation. My paintings are much more about those things that keep a person attached to this way of life despite its many problems. The freshness of nature and the sense of freedom attached to such a lifestyle are things to be celebrated.
You will find the image vaguely familiar. That's because I choose to revisit one which I had converted to an autumn scene a couple of years ago.
